EPA Allocates $3.78 Million to STREF for EPD Development in Tyre Recycling

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted nearly $160 million to 38 organizations across the country to combat climate pollution associated with the manufacturing of building materials and products. This initiative is part of the largest climate investment in history under the Inflation Reduction Act.

The grants, ranging from $250,000 to $10 million, aim to assist businesses in creating detailed Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that outline the environmental impacts of their products throughout their lifecycle. EPDs function similarly to environmental labels by quantifying the ecological effects linked to product manufacturing.

One of the recipients is the Scrap Tyre Research and Education Foundation (STREF) in Washington, D.C., which has received $3,778,326 to develop EPDs specifically for the tyre recycling sector. The focus of this project is to establish Product Category Rules (PCR) for tyre recycling, aiming to address existing data gaps related to environmental impacts in the industry.

This initiative will emphasize the use of Ground Tyre Rubber (GTR) from recycled tyres as a low-carbon additive in asphalt mixtures. Incorporating GTR into asphalt can enhance pavement durability and maintain smoother surfaces, thereby improving vehicle fuel efficiency and minimizing overall environmental effects.
