On July 18, 2024, the European Union's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) was officially enacted. This regulation, proposed by the European Commission in March 2022, is part of the EU Green Deal. It will replace the existing EU Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC) and introduce broader ecodesign requirements for a wider range of product categories. The goal is to foster fair competition for sustainable products within the EU market and boost the global competitiveness of businesses that offer sustainable solutions.

The ESPR applies to all physical goods placed on the EU market or put into use, including imports.

The EU aims to adopt its first work plan by April 19, 2025. The European Commission is expected to prioritize the following product groups: iron and steel; aluminum; textiles, especially clothing and footwear; furniture, including mattresses; tyres; detergents; paints; lubricants; chemicals; energy-related products needing new requirements or those currently regulated under Directive 2009/125 that require review under the ESPR; and information and communication technology products along with other electronic devices.
