The Brazilian Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex: Câmara de Comércio Exterior) recently rejected a request from the domestic tyre manufacturing industry to increase the import tariffs on truck tyres.
In a decision made on September 18, Camex approved the industry's request to raise the import tax on passenger car tyres from 16% to 25%. This new tariff measure will be effective for 12 months. Both requests to increase tyre import tariffs were submitted by the Brazilian National Tyre Industry Association (Anip: Associação Nacional da Indústria de Pneumáticos). For truck tyres, the industry sought to raise the current import tax from 16% to 35%.
Opposition to the proposed increase in truck tyre import tariffs came from the Brazilian Tyre Importers and Distributors Association (ABIDIP) and Brazilian transport groups. They argued that the tariff hike would increase tyre prices in Brazil by 25%, leading to a 6% rise in road transport costs. They warned that this could result in truck driver layoffs and declared that if authorities persist with the truck tyre import tax increase, they would organize a nationwide strike to protest the decision.
