On September 1st, Environment Minister Penny Simmonds officially announced the launch of the Tyrewise product stewardship scheme. This program allows tyre ‘generators’, such as tyre retailers, to collect used tyres for free. Additionally, the public can dispose of up to five old tyres at collection stations nationwide without any charge.
Tyrewise officially started in New Zealand on March 1st, implementing a " tyre stewardship fee" on all new imported tyres, whether sold in bulk or mounted on vehicles and machinery. This fee covers the collection and management of tyres after they are discarded, ensuring they are recycled or repurposed. Under the Tyrewise program, the old ad hoc disposal fees previously charged by many tyre fitters are no longer permitted.
With the introduction of free tyre collections in September, consumers can be confident that their tyres will be managed responsibly at the end of their life, rather than ending up in landfills, being stockpiled, or dumped illegally.
New Zealand has struggled with tyre recycling and reuse. Each year, approximately 6.5 million tyres are discarded, with only about 40% being recycled. The Tyrewise program aims to increase this recycling rate to 80% by the fourth year, with the goal of recycling over 90% by the sixth year.
